Studying overseas provides you with the opportunity to learn new things, meet new people, make friends and enjoy new experiences.  Settling into a new way of life can be hard sometimes especially when everything is new and that is why we would like to present you with a few tips about how to integrate your studies, working part time and social life.

AWI Student's Tips

  1. Be prepared + organized. Take your books, pens, folders and anything else you need. It would be a good idea to keep a folder for each subject.
  2. Go to class. Yes, it’s very hard to wake up on early morning, but it will be much easier at the exam! When a teacher is giving a lesson, take notes and put questions, if you don’t understand something.
  3. Study in a constructive way. While you are in the process of learning new material, remove all distractions like: mobile phones, television, loud/fast-paced music and talkative friends. Find a quiet place where you will not be distracted and avoid studying in bed, or on couch, where you may be tempted to take a nap.
  4. Take a break. One 15 minute break every 2 hours will help you to refresh your brain and then continue to stay focused on your topic.
  5. Go the extra yard. Even if you are getting a 98% in a class, you can improve your grade and understand the material better. Ask you teacher if you can do extra work, find new materials, new books.
  6. Do homework. It will help to review materials and ensure what you have understood from today’s class.
  7. Make friends. Join a study group. It is a great move to find motivation to study, discuss your topics, and make new friends. Go to the school trips, local events, gym and other activities that you like. You can share life stories, cultural experiences with your friends or do something nice like baking together some cookies.
  8. Know your distractions. Social Media, watching YouTube videos, TV, texting, phone calls from fiends…. Avoid them at all costs! Turn off your phone, install a social media blocker on your computer, stay away from TV.
  9. Learn from your mistakes. Sometimes you could do some stupid things and now is a time to learn from mistakes. Do not be shy and ask for help if it is needed.
  10. Keep in contact with your family. For sure you will have new friend, but do not ignore your family who will supports and encourage you all the time. Give them a call, tell them you are OK and you are thinking about them.
  11. Be careful. You are going to start new part of your life and new experience. Do not do things that might endanger your life, health or self-image.
  12. Eat well and exercise. Eating well during finals will keep your mind ready to absorb new information. Exercising will help improve your memory by reducing your stress.
  13. Explore your place. Take your new friends and go to discover new places around you. Go to the local website and see what they have to offer, for sure will find at least 50 things to do, to visit and to see.
